Poppies have been a garden favorite ever since I saw the amazing centers that show such magnificent forms as the stigma, pistols, stamens, anthers, and style. My mother always grew poppies and passed on the seeds for each of us (her children) t0 use in order to propagate our own poppies. She had gotten her poppy seeds from my great Aunt Alma in Iowa. I see them and always think of our family heritage being passed on through our DNA and the DNA in these poppy seeds turning into flowers just like those in my great aunt's gardens. In this painting I decided to let the stems and leaves become a design element that allowed me to freely play with filling background space more creatively than I would have done had I just drawn what I observed in the garden. The composition reminds me of a beautiful fabric that I would happily purchase to create fiber pieces.
